We have been working hard to restore approximately 4,000 linear feet of Thomas Run located in Harford Co, Maryland. This reach of Thomas Run had been exhibiting signs of bed and bank erosion allowing large amounts of sediment to flow downstream causing damage to the water quality and wildlife habitats. We are currently in the process of stabilizing the stream by realigning portions of the stream channel, installing stabilization measures and bio-engineering practices. Stabilization methods include but aren’t limited to installation of toewood on meander bends, which creates roughness to reduce shear stress, reduction of flow velocity and habitat creation. Bio-engineering practices include planting of warm season grasses and shrubs to provide stability and eventually shade cover for the stream. This project is funded through the Harford Soil Conservation district in partnership with Chesapeake & Atlantic Coastal Bay Trust Fund.

Restoration work has begun on Western Run, a cold water stream located in Baltimore County, Maryland. Over the years, the banks of Western Run have become severely eroded at an accelerated rate and have little to no vegetation; vegetation is essential to stabilizing the stream banks and preventing excessive erosion. Part of the restoration efforts will include excavating the banks to install toewood structures; these structures help to slow the water, dissipate energy, and stabilize the banks. Toewood structures also create habitat for small fish, macro-invertebrates, and other wildlife. Once the toewood structures are installed, warm season grasses, live stakes, and other bio-engineering practices will be planted. As these plants grow and flourish, they will root out with deep rooting depths which will continue to strengthen the stream banks over time. Grant funding for this restoration project was provided by the Chesapeake & Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund through the Baltimore County Soil Conservation District.
